Palliation Radiation therapy may be given to help control the size of the tumor and/or pain, and both radiation and chemotherapy with 5-FU alone or 5-FU + leucovorin may be used for palliation of advanced cancer.
The 5-FU + leucovorin combination usually provides little benefit, however, to someone who has relapsed after treatment with 5-FU alone. The current treatment recommendation is to begin therapy with 5-FU + leucovorin or an investigational protocol . Other drugs with some anticancer activity that might be considered include mitomycin-C , BCNU and CCNU .
